Why it stands out

A bird photograph becomes more useful when taxonomy rewards a near miss.

Birdle makes taxonomic proximity useful to ordinary image recognition. A wrong species can still confirm the correct order, family, or genus and turn an uncertain photograph into a narrower search.

Best for

  • Birders who can combine plumage and shape with taxonomic relationships.
  • Nature players who want hints and classification feedback after an uncertain image guess.

Think twice if

  • Players with no interest in species names or bird taxonomy.

Why the taxonomy matters

Birdle does not reduce a wrong species to a simple miss. A guess that shares the daily bird’s order, family, or genus turns the corresponding field green. That makes a near relative useful even when the photograph is difficult to place immediately.

The later hint changes the pace without removing the need to know bird names. Players still search and submit a common name, but the classification feedback provides a structured route between visual recognition and blind recall.

How to play

  1. Inspect the bird image and search for a species by common name.
  2. Submit a bird and compare its order, family, and genus with the daily species.
  3. Use the hints offered after three guesses to identify the bird within six attempts.
