Verified round model

How a round of Crossnum works.

Objective, input, feedback and stopping condition checked 29 September 2026.

Objective

Complete the number crossword so that every row and column equation is correct.

Your move

Select a blank cell, enter digits with the keyboard or keypad, and confirm with OK.

What changes

Completed lines are checked; an incorrect full line counts as one miss. The checked correct row was marked solved.

Round end

Solve the crossing equations and the final result cell to complete the daily board.

Why it stands out

Check the intermediate steps before committing a number.

The intermediate-result rules make elimination useful before a line is complete. A pair that reaches the target can still be invalid because it uses a fraction or an oversized divisor.

Best for

  • Solvers who like arithmetic with explicit bounds on valid answers.
  • Players who want a daily puzzle that gets harder later in the week.

Think twice if

  • Players who dislike checking intermediate arithmetic and division constraints.

Start with a line you can finish

Crossnum gives you the arithmetic signs and some of the numbers. An empty cell belongs to a row and a column, so filling it can make another equation solvable. Look for a line with one unknown first. Work out that value, check its allowed range, and confirm it before moving to the intersection.

The official rules say each puzzle has one solution that can be reached without guessing. Two blanks in a line do not necessarily require a guess: the number limits may leave only one valid pair. If several pairs remain, try another line.

A correct total can still break a rule

Read both ranges above the board. One applies to cell values; the other applies to results, including intermediate calculations. Every step must remain a whole number at or above zero.

Multiplication and division have another restriction. Entered multiplication operands and divisors are capped at 12. An intermediate product may be larger, provided it stays within the result range. When considering a division, list the divisors that produce whole numbers before testing the crossing equation.

The game checks a row or column once it is full. An incorrect line counts as one miss. Clear all marked cells before trying the line again, as the rules warn that another incorrect check adds another miss. Solve time determines ranking, with fewer misses breaking a tie.

Choose a day that suits the arithmetic

The official schedule starts with the easiest boards on Monday and ends with the hardest on Sunday. A difficult weekend board is therefore a poor measure of what a Monday session will feel like. We have not measured representative completion times or verified an archive of previous boards.

Crossnum opened without payment or login during our September 29 check. Its server explicitly blocks embedding, so the Play button opens the official site. The reset display varied by browser timezone; we have left the precise reset field unconfirmed.

Nerdle is an alternative if you prefer guessing a hidden equation. Crossnum shows its operators and uses crossing cells to restrict the remaining numbers. The similarly named Crossnumber is a different game.

How to play

  1. Select an empty cell and enter a number with the keyboard or onscreen keypad.
  2. Make each row and column equation correct, respecting parentheses and the displayed cell and result ranges.
  3. Confirm your entry with OK; use completed equations to narrow the remaining cells until the board is solved.

Before you play

Questions before you play.

Can a Crossnum calculation include fractions?
Every calculation step must produce a whole number. A fraction is invalid even if a later operation would make the final answer whole.
Why does Crossnum restrict some numbers to 12?
Numbers entered as multiplication operands and divisors cannot exceed 12. Intermediate results can exceed 12 if they stay within the board's result range.
How are misses counted in Crossnum?
A full incorrect row or column counts as one miss, regardless of how many cells are wrong. The rules say another incorrect submission of that line counts again.
Is Crossnum the same game as Crossnumber?
This page covers Crossnum at crossnum.com. Crossnumber by Coffee First Games has a separate official address and a separate catalog entry.

Anonymous browser play and the expanded rules were checked on September 29, 2026. A correct row was accepted; creator identity and a timezone-independent reset specification remain unconfirmed.
