Verified round model

How a round of Patentdle works.

Objective, input, feedback and stopping condition checked 17 August 2026.

Objective

Identify the everyday invention protected by the displayed real patent before the six available guesses are exhausted.

Your move

Type an invention name into the answer field, submit it with Guess, or choose Disclose Next to expose another patent excerpt.

What changes

The page advances through up to six excerpts and evaluates submitted invention names while preserving the patent decade as an initial clue.

Round end

The daily round resolves when the invention is identified or the six-guess opportunity ends; a new patent appears at 05:00 Oslo time.

Why it stands out

A translation puzzle disguised as a piece of technical history.

Patentdle turns a document written to be legally precise into a translation problem. The useful decision is not merely whether to guess, but whether the current excerpt contains a distinctive mechanism or is still generic enough to justify revealing more text.

Best for

  • Players who enjoy translating formal or technical language into an ordinary object.
  • Trivia solvers who prefer choosing when to reveal another clue instead of receiving all clues at once.

Think twice if

  • Players who find redacted legal prose frustrating or want feedback that narrows individual letters.

Translate the mechanism before naming the object

Patent prose often starts with a process rather than a familiar product name. Separate each excerpt into four parts: what is being acted on, what performs the action, what changes, and where the action happens. A phrase about drying a formed component, for example, is more useful when treated as a manufacturing step than as a literal description of the finished object.

The displayed decade is a second filter. It cannot identify the answer alone, but it can eliminate inventions that were already ordinary long before the patent period or did not yet exist.

Revealing text has an opportunity cost

Disclose Next supplies more language, but the central challenge is deciding whether the current excerpt is distinctive enough to justify a guess. First look for a combination of material, motion, and use case that would be unusual outside one product. Reveal another excerpt when the language still describes an entire class of machines.

Patent wording can remain indirect even after several disclosures. Do not wait for a consumer-facing product name; translate the described mechanism into the ordinary object that would use it.

A practical six-excerpt method

  1. Rewrite the excerpt in plain language without preserving its sentence order.
  2. List two or three product categories that need the described operation.
  3. Use the patent decade to remove historically implausible candidates.
  4. Guess only when one concrete object explains every important noun and verb.
  5. Otherwise reveal the next excerpt and look for a new component or use case.

Artle is the closest staged-reveal alternative, but swaps legal text for visual details from a work of art. Daily Crypticle is a better next step for players who want another compressed-language problem with more deliberate wordplay.

How to play

  1. Read the first excerpt and note the object, action, material, and era it describes.
  2. Submit the everyday invention you think the patent protects, or disclose the next excerpt.
  3. Use at most six guesses and progressively revealed excerpts to identify the invention.
